WP DOWNHILL CHAMPS 2011
This last weekend saw the running of the 2011 WP downhill champs which was held at Contermans Kloof just outside the Durbanville area.
I felt good coming into the race on my new large Giant, I felt at home on the bike and was ready to take on Andrew Neethling and Johann Potgieter again. Things started out a bit rocky on Saturday when I tried a gap in the rock garden and didnt make it. I broke my rear wheel which sent me over the bars. Luckily I was just a bit bruised, nothing serious.
Thankfully Jaco Veldsman from The Bike Shed lent me a wheel for the day, thanks man! I went home and got it sorted for Sunday.
On Sunday morning I did 2 warm up runs and then went up for a timed practice run which was a long wait. Unfortunately Gustav Brandt crashed just before I reached the top and had to be taken to hospital, which meant a 3 hour wait for us before our run which sucked because it was a scorcher of a day.
Anyway, we finally got under way and I was 3rd with a 2:08 which I was pleased with because I new I had more in the tank. Andrew Neethling was on a 2:04 and Johann Potgieter was on a 2:06.
Finally it was race run time and we all had good runs, I only made one mistake but not a big one so I was pleased with my 2:05:72. I ended up 3rd behind Andrew Neethling 2:02:78 and Johann Potgieter 2:04:62.
I did have one issue though, on the pedal at the bottom of the track I spun out of gear and couldnt understand it, when I checked my bike after the race I saw that my shifter wouldnt shift into the final gear. This was a pity because it definately wouldve made a difference to my time.
Thats the way it goes sometimes. I would just like to thank everyone who helped organise events this year, Chris Nixon, Gina Nixon and Rob Stark, thanks for all the support in downhill. Also I would like to thank all my sponsors for an awesome year, Giant, Leatt, Csixx, THE helmets, Adidas eyewear, Titanium designs and Red Bull SA you guys all rock! Also a big thanks to my parents, the Van Der Merwe family and everyone else who helped me out and supported me this year, its been amazing and I couldn't have done it without you!
Untill next year, 2012 should be a ripper on the Canfield Factory Team!
